About the Artist - Bishu Som
have had the habit of scribbling since early childhood and when my friends dreamt of becoming a policeman or a doctor all I thought of was becoming an illustrator. A bulk of my teenage pocket money was spent buying the Disney books from Gariahat Boulevard while a bulk of my time was spent studying Ariel's face, Simba’s mane and so on.
But life had other plans and tribulations of earning ruji-ruti took over all other priorities. Then last year lockdown happened - and without any travel or social gatherings, I suddenly found with too much leisure time and absolutely no idea what to do. And one day in my machi mara life while browsing through Youtube feed, I came across digital painting tutorials and something immediately clicked - I downloaded Autodesk Sketchbook on my mobile and painted an apple - the same apple illustration that my art teacher taught me in second grade. From thereafter the learning curve has been steep yet satisfactory and after a few months found enough courage to flood my social media timeline with audacious attempts. I am still a novice and a long way to go before I can call myself a digital artist but with each day learning a newer technique of lighting or generating texture has been overtly satisfying.
When the good folks at Cali Achey asked me to contribute here, I was honored to get a chance to showcase my creations. Here’s to the hope that looking at these illustrations bring you the same joy as I had while creating them.
